If you find something growing on your skin and you think it could be melanoma, do not panic.

But do not delay, either.Melanoma is the most deadly form of skin cancer, but the five-year survival for local melanoma – before it has spread – is 99 percent. So, you want to see a doctor immediately.

The possibility of growth or injury is not cancer. Most of the lesions and pigmentation changes are not.

But you have to make sure.

Look at the mole. There are specific signs of melanoma. If any of these apply to moles or lesions, make an appointment with your doctor.

- Are there any changes in moles, blemish, freckle, mole or pigmented area?
